Holy spherical cow, my favourite physicist right now – Juan Maldacena – just joined Twitter:
Juan Maldacena is of course most famous for his AdS/CFT-correspondence from 1997. The paper where he proposed it is probably the most cited physics article of modern times.
You can read more about him here:
One of his more recent ideas is the ER=EPR conjecture, where ER stands for Einstein-Rosen bridges (i.e. wormholes) and EPR for a paper by Einstein-Rosen-Podolsky where they first described quantum entanglement (although trying to use it to show that quantum mechanics has to be incomplete). He proposed (in the most radical version) that quantum entanglement and wormholes are actually the same, indicating a link between the otherwise incompatible theories of quantum mechanics and general relativity.
As far as I understand it, these ideas are very influential in the research direction summarized as “It from Qubit” (which I, a layman, find to be the most fascinating thing to come out of physics in the recent years).
So, for those of you who have twitter – follow that man!
It turns out this twitter account does not belong to Juan Maldacena, as Sean Carrol tweeted out:
Oh man, what a bummer 😦
